About this type: Lever release

Release system for lockable gas springs, mounted directly on the release connection. Operating the lever presses the release pin and unlocks the gas spring. For gas springs that are easy to reach.

Release systems for lockable gas springs

When the release pin is pressed, the valve inside the gas spring opens and the piston rod can move in or out. When the control is released, the valve closes and the gas spring locks in its current position. Operate it directly with a lever or remotely with a Bowden cable, for flaps, backrests, seats, tables and treatment couches.

How to choose a release system
  1. Check the gas spring: design, release pin and connection thread.
  2. Define the operating point: directly at the spring or remotely.
  3. Measure the space: the length of the release head and the movement space of the lever.
  4. Choose the lever or cable length: the lever must be easy to reach, the cable long enough but not routed in tight loops.
  5. Consider the operating force: it depends on the gas spring, its extension force and the lever ratio.
  6. Check the release travel: the pin must be pressed far enough for the valve to open completely.
  7. Ensure reliable return: the pin must return fully so that the gas spring locks securely.

The release system and the gas spring work as one unit. A system that fits mechanically is not necessarily adjusted correctly.

Installation and functional check

Secure the movable part against unintended lowering before installation. We recommend:

  • Screw the release system fully onto the intended thread.
  • Position the lever so it moves freely through its full travel.
  • Test first without high load, then through the complete adjustment range.
  • Check that the gas spring locks immediately when the control is released and that the lever returns fully.
  • If the gas spring keeps moving after release, check whether the release system still presses lightly on the pin.

Do not shorten, extend, grind or otherwise modify the release pin, and do not use the release system as a mechanical end stop.

Frequently asked questions
When do I need a Bowden cable?
When the gas spring is not directly accessible or the control needs to be placed away from it.
Which Bowden cable length is correct?
Long enough for the complete routing including the bend radii. An unnecessarily long cable makes installation and operation harder.
Why does the gas spring not lock after I release the control?
The Bowden cable may be under preload or the lever may not return fully, so the release pin stays partly pressed.
Can every release system be combined with every lockable gas spring?
No. The connection thread, release travel, operating force and installation space must be compatible.
Can the gas spring be adjusted without a release system?
The release pin can in principle be pressed directly, but a suitable release system is needed for safe, repeatable and ergonomic operation.
