What Are Stainless Steel Springs?

Stainless steel springs are made from the austenitic spring steel grade X10CrNi18-8 (V2A) manufactured to EN 10270-3. This is the most common grade for stainless steel springs in standard catalogs – a good balance of high strength and corrosion resistance for most industrial environments.

For extremely demanding environments involving chlorides, saltwater contact, or aggressive chemicals, alternative materials such as Inconel, Incoloy HT800, and spring bronze are available on request.

What Is the Practical Difference in Strength?

Spring steel (EN 10270-1-SH) typically has 10–15% higher tensile strength than stainless X10CrNi18-8 at the same wire diameter. This means that if you replace spring steel with stainless in exactly the same dimension, you get a spring with a slightly lower maximum load capacity and reduced fatigue life at high cycle counts.
